Manchester United transfer targets: 8 goalkeepers to fix Onana crisis

Manchester United’s 2024/25 campaign has revealed glaring deficiencies across the pitch — but none more pressing than the situation in goal. The Red Devils, already battling inconsistency in attack and vulnerability in defence, are now confronting a full-blown goalkeeper crisis.

Since joining from Inter Milan in 2023, André Onana has failed to deliver the reliability demanded of a Manchester United No.1. Despite his moments of excellence, the Cameroonian has been prone to critical errors — including in costly defeats to Bayern Munich, Brighton, and Wolves. His once-celebrated distribution has also faltered in the Premier League, and he has looked increasingly uncertain when dealing with high balls and set pieces.

With Onana’s form under scrutiny and patience running thin, United must act. Whether they opt for a seasoned veteran, a high-potential talent, or a short-term solution until 2026, change is essential. Here are eight goalkeepers — reshuffled by realism, fit, and availability — who could help restore order at Old Trafford.

1. Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund)

A complete, modern goalkeeper, Kobel has been a pillar of consistency for Borussia Dortmund. The Swiss international boasts excellent passing, commanding presence, and — crucially — a lack of major errors. With 49 clean sheets in 149 games, he’s proven at the top level. Chelsea are also interested, but United must act boldly to secure him.

2. David de Gea (Fiorentina)

The most decorated goalkeeper in Manchester United’s modern history, De Gea is thriving in Serie A after a year in limbo. Now at Fiorentina, he’s kept seven clean sheets and rebuilt his reputation. With Erik ten Hag and John Murtough gone, a return to Old Trafford — which De Gea previously said he’d consider — could become a serious possibility.

3. Mike Maignan (Milan)

If United aim for a marquee signing, Maignan is the dream. A Serie A champion and one of the most consistent goalkeepers in Europe, he combines elite reflexes with leadership and big-game mentality. Milan will demand a premium, but Maignan could be the long-term answer United have lacked since peak De Gea.

4. James Trafford (Burnley)

A breakout star in the Championship, Trafford has posted 24 clean sheets in 33 matches while conceding just nine goals. The 21-year-old already came close to a move to Newcastle, and top clubs remain keen. He’s young, fearless, and has all the tools to develop into a Premier League star — if United strike quickly.

5. Juan Musso (Atlético Madrid/Atalanta)

Musso, currently on loan at Atlético Madrid, is flying under the radar but could be a clever pickup. The Argentinian is in the 99th percentile for save percentage in Europe and brings solid experience. With Jan Oblak blocking his path, a move to Manchester could give him the platform he needs.

6. Altay Bayindir (Manchester United)

If financial or timing constraints prevent an immediate signing, United may need to look within. Bayindir has impressed in limited action — notably in the FA Cup win over Arsenal. With Onana struggling, the Turkish international may deserve a proper run to prove he’s more than just a backup.

7. Illan Meslier (Leeds United)

Once high on United’s radar, Meslier is back in contention. Still only 24, the Frenchman has notched 20 clean sheets for Leeds in the Championship this season. He has Premier League experience, but also a tendency for costly errors. If he can mature further, he could be a worthwhile risk.

8. Senne Lammens (Royal Antwerp)

At just 22, Lammens is a long-term project — not an immediate fix. The Belgian has emerged as Antwerp’s first-choice keeper and a regular for the U21 national team. He’s expressed admiration for United and admitted a move would be hard to reject. One for the future, but maybe not yet ready for the spotlight.

Time for Ruthless Clarity at Old Trafford

Manchester United cannot afford another gamble in goal. With defensive frailty and attacking struggles already evident, the team needs security at the back — and fast. Gregor Kobel and Mike Maignan are ideal long-term solutions, while David de Gea or Juan Musso could serve as stabilising short-term fixes.

James Trafford and Illan Meslier bring youth and potential, though they’ll need time. Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir deserves more consideration internally, and Senne Lammens remains an intriguing future prospect.

Whatever route the club takes, indecision is no longer an option. The next goalkeeper must not only be a shot-stopper — he must be a leader. Because the next chapter of Manchester United’s rebuild may depend on who guards the net.
