‎After Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest secured their spots in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday, all eyes turned to Sunday’s fixtures, with Aston Villa facing Championship side Preston North End in the early match. The day also featured a high-profile clash between Manchester City and Bournemouth later on.
‎Preston, the only team outside the Premier League remaining in the competition, hosted Villa at Deepdale. However, the match quickly descended into controversy as balloons, representing Preston’s club colors, flooded the pitch right at the start of the game.
‎Initially, some fans found the sight amusing. However, the situation quickly escalated, with many Villa fans expressing frustration on social media. They felt the balloons were hindering their team’s early attempts to gain momentum.
‎On X (formerly Twitter), one Villa fan suggested, “Underdog tactic; throw tons of balloons onto the pitch. Preston fans, I’m looking at you!” Another supporter demanded, “Anyone fancy getting those balloons off the pitch?” Some fans even proposed a temporary stoppage, with one saying, “Why can’t we stop the game for 30 seconds and pop all these balloons? Ridiculous idea.”
‎Others made light of the situation, with one fan humorously referring to it as the “Balloon Classico” – a nod to the famous football rivalry.
‎As the match approached halftime, Preston fans were likely pleased with the 0-0 scoreline, as their team managed to hold Villa at bay, creating a few notable chances of their own.
‎The match remains finely balanced, with both teams eager to progress to the FA Cup semi-finals. The draw for the next round will be held shortly after the final whistle at Deepdale, determining the next opponent for the winner.
